On Sunday, March 24, the tournament organisers unveiled the format for the upcoming Counter-Strike 2 tournament, Esports World Cup 2024. The competition will take place sometime in the summer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Esports World Cup 2024 doesn’t have a confirmed date yet and it’s still unclear which teams will attend the event. So far, only Intel Extreme Masters 2024 champions, Team Spirit, are confirmed to attend, with the remaining spots still to be filled by Copenhagen Major 2024 champions, seven teams based on the ESL World Ranking, and six teams who’ll fight for their Esports World Cup 2024 ticket in regional qualifiers.

Esports World Cup 2024 Format

As confirmed, the upcoming Counter-Strike tournament will start with a 14-team best-of-three (BO3) opening round. The winners of the first round will then advance to the quarter-finals, whereas the losers will enter a last-chance stage, from where only one team will proceed to the playoffs.

The Play-In stage will welcome eight teams, with only one proceeding to the playoffs, where they’ll join the winners of the first round in a single-elimination bracket. The Play-In stage will be single-elimination, with all matches played as best-of-one (BO1), whereas the playoffs will feature a single-elimination best-of-three (BO3) format.

So far, Team Spirit are the only team with an invite for Esports World Cup 2024 as the reigning IEM Katowice 2024 champions. They’ll be joined by PGL Major Copenhagen champions, and seven teams from the ESL Rankings. The rest of the spots will be filled by qualifiers in Europe, South America, North America, Asia, Oceania, and regional qualifiers.

Each region will receive only one spot through the qualifiers.

The tournament organisers have yet to confirm the prize pool for Esports World Cup 2024 or the exact dates of when the tournament will start.

Esports World Cup 2024 is the successor to the Gamers8 Saudi Arabian festival, which featured various esports, including Rocket League and a Counter-Strike tournament with a $1,000,000 prize pool. Team Vitality won the event.

Esports World Cup 2024 is also a part of Saudi Vision 2023, a program by the Saudi Arabian government to diversify the kingdom’s economy and expand its presence in the esports world. Saudi Arabia’s government already made steps in that direction when its Savvy Gaming Group acquired ESL Gaming and FACEIT, with further expansion expected to happen in the next six years.
