On Wednesday, December 20, NIgma Galaxy announced big roster news, as the European Dota 2 team released three of their members. That includes Yuma "Yuma" Langlet, Kasra "Mikey" Mesbah, and the team captain Ivan "MinD_ContRoL" Ivanov.

The shocking roster changes didn't come out of nowhere, as Nigma Galaxy promised to make some adjustments to their lineup ahead of the 2024 season. However, no one expected that the team would part ways with MinD_ContRoL.

The 28-year-old Dota 2 legend has been playing alongside Maroun "GH" Merhej and Kuro "KuroKy" Salehi Takhasomi since their time at Team Liquid. They established themselves as one of the strongest trio in the Dota 2 scene, having achieved a lot at the top level, including a gold medal from The International 2017 and a runner-up finish at TI 2019.

After the disappointing finish at TI9, GH, KuroKy, MinD_ContRoL left Team Liquid to form Team Nigma, which later rebranded to Nigma Galaxy. Unfortunately, their separate venture didn't lead to many accomplishments.

Over the four seasons, MinD_ContRoL and co. have shown some glimpses of greatness but only attended a few Major tournaments and never qualified for The International. In 2023, Nigma Galaxy didn't win a single tournament and looked particularly disappointing in The International Western European qualifiers, in which the team finished in ninth-11th place.

So even though the announced roster changes shocked the Dota 2 community, Nigma Galaxy had to change something to find more traction at the top level of competitive Dota 2.

A New Direction

By releasing three players, Nigma Galaxy are clearly moving in a new direction. However, it's still unclear what will happen with Amer "Miracle-" Al-Barkawi, who stepped down from the roster in December 2022 due to health reasons.

The 26-year-old is still with the team, albeit as an inactive player, which might suggest that he'll return to the active lineup in 2024. There are also questions about KuroKy's future, with some reports suggesting he will retire.

On the other side, GH announced on Wednesday that he would take a break from competitive Dota 2, suggesting that Nigma Galaxy might disband or build a new roster around Miracle- and KuroKy, assuming he decides to keep competing.
