On Saturday, December 2, JD Gaming announced the departure of mid laner Zhuo "knight" Ding. The news comes after JD Gaming’s failed attempt to win the League of Legends World Championship 2023 and complete the Golden Road.

The Chinese esports organisation started its offseason on November 29, when JD Gaming parted ways with top laner Bai "369" Jia-Hao. Since then, JDG has announced the signing of analyst Kim "Lyn" Da-bin (formerly of Liiv SANDBOX) and head coach Won "Mafa" Sang-yeon from Gen.G.

However, the biggest roster move happened on Friday, when JD Gaming unveiled that mid laner knight won’t be renewing his contract with the team.

Knight joined JD Gaming in December 2022 from Top Esports as one of the best mid laners in the world. The LoL superstar has since helped JD Gaming win the LPL 2023 Spring regular season and playoffs, the 2023 Mid-Season Invitational, and the LPL 2023 Summer Playoffs.

However, despite JD Gaming’s dominant showing throughout the year, the Chinese squad failed to complete the Golden Road and crashed out of the LoL World Championship in the semifinals, where they lost against the eventual champions, T1.

While knight has decided to leave the team, JD Gaming has managed to keep some of its top players, including jungler Seo "Kanavi" Jin-hyeok, ADC Park "Ruler" Jae-hyuk, and support Lou "MISSING" Yun-Feng. All three have extended their contracts until 2025.

However, this still leaves JD Gaming with two gaps to fill, as the team needs to sign a new top laner and mid laner.

What’s Next For Knight?

Knight has yet to reveal which team he’ll join for the 2024 season, but it’s certain the 23-year-old won’t retire yet. Despite being involved in the scene for eight years, knight is still widely regarded as one of the best mid laners in the Chinese LoL league, and he’ll likely not have problems finding a new home.

According to some unconfirmed reports, knight is close to signing a contract with Bilibili Gaming for the 204 season. There, he would replace Zeng “Yagao” Qi, whose contract expired in November.

The deal has yet to be officially announced.
