League of Legends World Championship 2023 is the final event of the 2023 LoL esports season and one of the world's most significant and most-watched esports events. Though LoL Worlds 2023 is still months away, Riot Games has already shared some details about the season-culminating event, and here is everything you need to know about it.
When Is the League of Legends World Championship 2023?
LoL World Championship 2023 is set to be held from October 10 to November 19, 2023, at the end of the 2023 LoL esports season. This year's tournament will take place a couple of weeks later than in 2022 (September 29 – November 11) to accommodate the LoL esports players competing in the Asian Games in China.
Where is the League of Legends World Championship 2023?
The LoL World Championship 2023 will be held in South Korea for the first time since 2018 and the third time in history. The LoL World Championship first visited South Korea in Season 3 (2013), when the tournament was held in Singapore, Taipei, Busan, and Seoul.
This year's event will be held at four different venues for each of the four stages of the tournament.
- Play-Ins (October 10-15): LoL Park in Seoul
- Group Stage (October 19-29): KBS Arena, Seoul
- Quarterfinals (November 2-5): Sajik Indoor Gymnasium, Busan
- Semifinals (November 11-12): Sajik Indoor Gymnasium, Busan
- Finals (November 19): Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul
The LoL Worlds 2023 grand final venue, Gocheok Sky Dome, previously hosted the 2017 World Baseball Classic and f Group C at the 2019 WBSC Premier 12 but has never hosted an esports event before.
League Of Legends World Championship 2023 Format
LoL World Championship 2023 will be divided into three stages – Play-ins, the Swiss Stage, and the Playoffs. Each stage will be hosted at a different venue in South Korea.
Play-In Stage
- Eight teams drawn into two double-elimination brackets
- All matches are best-of-three (Bo3)
- Upper bracket winner of one group faces the lower bracket winner from the other group in a Bo5 series
- Two winners of the best-of-five (Bo5) series advance to the Swiss Stage
Swiss Stage
- 16 teams (14 pre-qualified and 2 teams from the Play-In stage)
- Swiss-style format with five rounds
- Teams with three wins advance to the knockout stage
- Teams with three defeats get eliminated
- All qualification and elimination matches are best-of-three (Bo3)
- All other matches are best-of-one (Bo1)
Playoffs
- 8 qualified teams from the Swiss Stage
- Single-eliminaiton bracket
- All matches are best-of-five (Bo5)
League Of Legends World Championship 2023 Teams
LoL World Championship 2023 will welcome 22 LoL esports teams from nine regions. Eight teams will begin their LoL Worlds 2023 journey in the Play-In stage, while the remaining 14 will have received a direct invite to the Swiss Stage – depending on their placement in their regional competitions and the region they're from.
The 22 invites were divided among nine regions based on the league's strength.
- Korea (LCK) – 4 teams
- China (LPL) – 4 teams
- MENA (LEC) – 3 teams
- North America (LCS) – 3 teams
- Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Southeast Asia and Oceania (PCS) – 2 teams
- Vietnam (VCS) – 2 teams
- Japan (LJL) – 1 team
- Brazil (CBLOL) – 1 team
- Latin America (LLA) – 1 team
- Worlds Qualifying Series (LCS vs LEC) – 1 team
What Is the League Of Legends World Championship 2023 Prize Pool?
Riot Games does not share the LoL World Championship prize pool until the tournament ends. However, since 2019, the prize pool was $2,225,000, which is expected to be the prize pool offered at the LoL Worlds 2023.
