On Thursday, March 28, Schalke 04 announced that the club is exiting League of Legends esports and will instead focus its resources on the company's core business – football. However, Schalke 04 will continue to stay involved in esports by fielding an EA FC team.

Schalke 04 entered the League of Legends esports scene in 2016 when the German football club acquired Elements and their EU LCS 2016 Summer slot. The team competed in EU LCS for two years with varying success and in 2018 made the EU LCS 2018 Summer Playoffs, before narrowly missing out on qualifying for the LoL World Championship.

Schalke 04 continued competing in the European League of Legends esports scene after franchising and was a part of the LoL EMEA Championship (LEC) for two years. In the first year, Schalke placed third in LEC 2019 Summer Playoffs and again came one game short of qualifying for LoL World Championship, with a third-place finish in LEC 2019 Regional Finals.

Over the next two years, Schalke failed to establish themselves as one of Europe’s top LoL esports teams and at the end of 2021 decided to sell its LEC spot to Team BDS.

Since then, Schalke 04 remained involved in the LoL esports scene with its ERL team, which competed in Prime League. In the Prime League, Schalke 04 found some success, won the 2020 championship and placed second in 2022. However, they failed to accomplish much outside of qualifying for European Masters 2022 Summer, where they placed 10th-15th.

The lack of success of its LoL division might have contributed to the decision to exit the LoL esports scene; however, in the announcement, Schalke 04 only stated that the club would instead use its resources on its core business, football.

With the news, all players and members of the Schalke 04 League of Legends team are free agents.
