In a shocking turn of events, Evil Geniuses decided to allow players from its Valorant team to explore their options for the 2024 season, just weeks into the Valorant offseason. The news comes less than a month after Evil Geniuses won the VALORANT Champions title, with reports stating that the players can either leave the team or accept significant pay cuts.

The news was initially revealed by esports reporter Max "purest" Katz, who has earned himself a reputable name in the industry after previously reporting several major roster moves. Although EG's supposed decision to allow its players to explore options hasn't been officially confirmed yet, the social media posts from the players suggest that the reports are correct.

Purest' reports also provide some context to Evil Geniuses players' worrying social media posts, with Corbin "C0M" Lee claiming that "nothing makes sense", whereas his teammate, Ethan "Ethan" Arnold, complained how, in this industry, winning doesn't mean anything.

Evil Geniuses have not commented on the situation, nor has it been officially confirmed that EG players are allowed to leave the team if they wish.

This is not the first time that an esports organisation allowed its roster to leave the team after winning a major trophy, nor is it exclusive to Valorant. In 2022, the DRX League of Legends team released all but one of the players who led the Korean esports organisation to the LoL World Championship 2022 title. However, while the result in both stories is the same, Evil Geniuses' situation does seem a bit more grim.

Evil Geniuses won the VALORANT Champions 2023 title in a remarkable fashion, going from being complete underdogs to emerging as the best Valorant team in the world. However, despite the team's success, the North American esports organisation seems to be struggling financially, likely due to the organisation's lack of success in other esports titles it's involved in.

Evil Geniuses Dota 2 roster hasn't accomplished much this season outside of reaching the finals of all three DPC SA Division I events, whereas its Counter-Strike team hasn't won a tournament since 2020.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment was Evil Geniuses' League of Legends team, which went from being one of the top squads in LCS in 2022 to missing out on the LoL World Championship 2023 with a fifth-sixth place finish in LCS 2023 Championship.

It remains to be seen what the future will hold in store for Evil Geniuses' Valorant team and what its players will decide to do this offseason. But considering they'll either face significant pay cuts or look for another team to join for VCT 2024, the latter scenario seems more likely.
