What is the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC)?
LEC Europe’s top-flight League of Legends esports league, featuring the region’s strongest 10 squads, who compete for the prestigious title and the right to represent Europe at the four international events – First Stand, Esports World Cup, Mid-Season Invitational, and the LoL World Championship.
The league has changed its format numerous times throughout history, recently swapping over to a three-split format, dividing a season into three stages, each with a group stage and playoffs.
During the group stage, the 10 participating teams are put into a single round-robin group, with all matches played as best-of-three. Each team plays each other once throughout the split, with the top-six performing teams at the end of it proceeding to the playoffs.
The LEC playoffs are double-elimination, with all matches played as best-of-five (BO5). The teams get seeded into the playoff bracket based on their group stage placement.
First-fourth-placed teams get put in the upper bracket, while fifth and sixth-placed teams start in the lower bracket.
All three playoffs are used to determine the representatives at the four international events – the right reserved only for the top-performing teams.

LEC History & Past Champions
League of Legends EMEA Championship was first formed in 2013 as the European LoL Championship Series (EU LCS) after Riot Games announced the formation of LCS in August 2012.
The LCS was the first fully professional LoL league with eight teams. At the end of 2014, an expansion tournament was held, adding two more teams to the EU LCS, increasing the number to 10 for the start of the 2015 season. The limit of 10 teams has remained put since.
EU LCS went through its first rebrand in 2019 when it became the LoL European Championship (LEC) and introduced franchising, following the example of North America’s LCS, which decided to take that step a year prior.
The league went through another rebrand in 2023, when Turkey, CIS, and MENA regions merged with the European region, renaming the league to the LoL EMEA Championship but keeping its abbreviation (LEC).
The 2023 season was also the first season to host three splits (Winter-Spring-Summer) rather than two (Spring-Summer). The three-split structure has been used ever since.
