League of Legends World Championship is the culminating event of the LoL esports season, where the top teams from all Tier-1 leagues gather to fight it out for the ultimate title of the best in the world.
The number of participants has changed over the years – more recently, in 2025, when it was revealed that LoL Worlds 2025 will feature 17 teams (three less than in 2024). That was due to the merger and formation of new Tier-1 leagues.
The participants get revealed in late summer/early autumn when the regional leagues come to a close; however, Riot reveals in advance how many seeds each league/region will get.
The seeding is mainly determined by the region’s strength i.e. the past success of the teams from the regions.
Each of the five major regions receives three seeds. Additional two seeds are awarded to Mid-Season Invitational champions and runners-up.

LoL World Championship Format
League of Legends World Championship format has changed over the years as a response to the changing of the formats in regional leagues and the introduction of new international events.
In 2025, following the formation of LCP and LTA, Riot Games confirmed that each of the five regions will receive three seeds. Moreover, two additional invites will be handed out to MSI champions and runners-up, expanding the number of participating teams to 17.
The LoL World Championship is traditionally divided into three stages – the Play-In Stage, the Swiss Stage, and the Knockout Stage.
The Play-In stage welcomes lower-seeded teams from the five regions, where they battle it out for a spot in the Swiss Stage.
Swiss Stage is the main stage of LoL Worlds, with teams fighting it out in a Swiss System format for playoff tickets. The Knockout stage is the final stage of LoL Worlds and is single-elimination, with all games played as best-of-three (BO3), except for the grand finale, which is best-of-five (BO5).
