According to recent reports, League of Legends pro player Joon "Jojopyun" Pyun is set to join MAD Lions KOI for the 2025 season. If the two parties follow through, the 20-year-old will be the first North American starter in the history of the European LoL league.
As the League of Legends World Championship 2024 unfolds across Germany, France, and England, the teams who have not made it to the big stage are scrambling to prepare for the new season.
While none of the roster moves have yet to be officially confirmed, Jojopyun's reported arrival to MAD Lions KOI remains one of the more exciting roster changes of this season.
As reported earlier this week, the mid laner has agreed to sign for the LoL EMEA Championship team, MAD Lions KOI after spending the last season competing for Cloud9. This deal is billed as one of the biggest signings in the LEC this offseason.
Jojopyun is widely considered one of the most promising mid laners in North America. He started his esports career in September 2020 with Noble Esports before joining Evil Geniuses Academy in January 2021.
After one season with EG Academy the Canadian player got promoted to Evil Geniuses' Lol Championship Series (LCS) lineup, where he spent two years. The mid lander helped EG win their first LCS title in 2022 Spring and led the team to LoL Worlds 2022, where the North American side finished in 11th-14th-place.
In the next season, Evil Geniuses failed to accomplish as much and ended the year with a fifth-sixth-place finish in the LCS 2023 Championship. Financial issues eventually led to the disbandment of EG's LoL project and Jojopyun joining Cloud9.
With Cloud9, Jojopyun came close to winning his second LCS title but again came out short, with a third-place finish in the LCS 2024 Spring Playoffs and a fourth-place finish in the LCS 2024 Championsip. Still, despite his failure to qualify for LoL Worlds 2024, Jojopyun remained a hot commodity on the market.
While it was reported that many teams approached Jojopyun, he has supposedly decided to join MAD Lions KOI. This has yet to be officially announced by either the Spanish esports organisation of Jojopyun, however, the he has hinted at the move multiple times via Twitter posts.
If Jojopyun joins MAD Lions KOI, he would be the first North American LoL esports player to start on a European LoL team.
While this title technically belongs to a North American coach, Nicholas "Inero" Smith, who subbed in for the MOUZ NXT roster during the EUCS 2015 Summer, Jojopyun is the first player to sign for a European team with the intention to be a starter.
