100 Thieves qualified for the LoL World Championship 2024 by placing third in the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS), which is not a massive accomplishment. Beyond that, 100 Thieves arguably did not deserve to finish third in their domestic league.

Throughout the 2024 LoL esports season, 100 Thieves were one of the worst-performing squads in the LCS – especially in the summer split. They finished the regular season in fifth place with a 3-4 record, yet they still made it to the big stage by beating Dignitas twice and by upsetting Cloud9.

Compared to the LCS' top teams, FlyQuest and Team Liquid, 100 Thieves are a substantially weaker squad. Still, they are priced as massive favourites against Movistar R7 mainly because Movistar are not expected to do well. But is this a reason enough to have 100T as 1.08 favourites?

Movistar R7 won the LLA league, which is an accomplishment on its own, but winning a lesser region does not guarantee that the Latin American squad will do well at LoL Worlds 2024.

This core of players placed last at LoL Worlds 2023 and 10th-11th at MSI 2023, so it is more than fair to question their chances to do much better this year. On the other hand, Movistar R7 looked far more dominant this season, especially in the second half of the year. So, while they likely won't accomplish much, Movistar R7 can do some damage in the play-ins.

100 Thieves v Movistar R7

Even though there is a clear gap in quality between the LLA and LCS, 100 Thieves should not be priced as 1.08 favourites against any team. While it is true that this is their game to lose, 100 Thieves were not too consistent this season, and seeing them struggle against other bottom LCS squads makes it more believable that they might not do that well against LLA's champions either.

There is a world where 100 Thieves run over Movistar R7, but at these numbers, I like my chances with the underdogs to win a map.
