Intel Extreme Masters Rio 2024 marks only the second Counter-Strike esports tournament with Casper "cadiaN" Møller as an in-game leader. Even though he had a tough start with the new team, as Astralis crashed out of BLAST Premier: Fall Final 2024, Astralis posted a much better game in the opening round in Rio.

On Monday, Astralis edged past ESL Pro League Season 20 finalists Eternal Fire with 13-11, which is a good sign to come. While it was only a BO1 series, seeing Astralis gaining traction should be worrying for all other teams, as with this lineup, Astralis should be competing for big trophies.

For this match, in particular, Astralis should have an advantage as their in-game leader cadiaN previously served as IGL of HEROIC for over four years and has played alongside René "TeSeS" Madsen and Rasmus "sjuush" Beck.

HEROIC Form

HEROIC have looked very shaky over the last few months, but they turned many heads with their victory in the first round of the IEM Rio 2024 group stage.

The Danish lineup defied all the odds and upset the current no. Counter-Strike esports team in the world, G2 Esports with 13-10 on Dust II, largely thanks to TeSeS, who ended the map with a 1.83 performance rating.

Yet, while HEROIC did beat a significantly better team, it is worth noting that G2 Esports did not perform as well on the day. Moreover, it was only a BO1 series, so that victory holds a bit less value.

Verdict

Astralis v HEROIC

Quality-wise, HEROIC and Astralis are fairly similar; however, we have to put more weight on Astralis' in-game leader, who will have something ready for this former team.

While HEROIC did take down a significantly better opponent in round one, that was their only solid game in a very long time. The same can be said for Astralis, yet they have also recently replaced their in-game leader, who should help his new squad find new heights.
